Senior Austin Scruggs of the Elkers will join teammates Alex Bon, Ricky Delhunty, and Dominic Cherry on the Pennsylvania squad for the Big 30 Charities Classic being played on Saturday, Aug. 7, at Parkway Field in Bradford.

Joining the Ridgway defensive lineman in this week's Big 30 Committee announcement are Elk County Catholic's Bryan Schatz and Mitchell Troha, along with Ethan Smith and TJ Vanscoter from Otto-Eldred.

The game, which began in 1974, pits 2021 all-star graduates from Pennsylvania against their Big 30 area New York counterparts. Proceeds from the annual Charity Classic are donated to individuals in need and charitable organizations in McKean, Elk, Cameron, Potter, and Warren in Pennsylvania and Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties in New York. Unfortunately, the 2020 contest was canceled due to COVID-19.

The Keystone state will be led by Elkers head coach Mark Heindl, Mickey Delhunty, Rick Viglionie, Jack Kifer, and Tony Defilippi. The quintet had been selected to coach last year's game.

Scruggs (6'2", 290 lbs.) will continue his career at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, where he will study welding. The Boys Scouts of America Eagle Scout had eight solo tackles and was in on an additional nine during Ridgway's six-game, COVID-19 shortened, 2020 season.

"It's a huge and well-deserved honor for Austin," Heindl said. "To see where Austin came from when he started playing football in eighth grade to today is night and day. He went from a gentle giant to be a force to reckon with. He's a reason why we won a lot of games here. So it's cool for him to have one more chance to play high school football."

Scruggs earned two District 9 Class AA football championships with the Elkers in 2018 and 2019. He also competed in track for Johnsonburg. According to the Big 30 release, his favorite moment was getting his first sack against his old school Brockway. His hobbies include watching and reading Marvel and Star Wars movies and comics, lifting, and visiting Fusion Buffet. His favorite NFL team is the Browns, and Nick Chubb is his favorite player.
