District 9 Class AA champion Johnsonburg takes on the fourth-place finisher from the WPIAL (District 7) the Carmichaels Mikes at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney at 4 p.m. today. The Rams improved to 21-0 with their 4-1 win over Kane in the district championship game on Memorial Day at Showers Field in DuBois to advance to the PIAA opening round.
Carmichaels (18-3) finished the regular season 16-1. The lone loss was to Chartiers-Houston – 7-6 on April 16. The Mikes avenged the defeat with a 7-2 win in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs on May 21. They beat Apollo-Ridge 12-1 (5 innings) to open the tournament. They enter today's game coming off a 7-6 loss to Shenango in the semi-finals and a 7-2 defeat to Serra Catholic in the WPIAL Consolation game on June 1.
Johnsonburg, behind the no-hit pitching of Collin Porter, beat Port Allegany 8-0 on May 25 to open the District 9 playoffs. Gabe Watts was on the mound during the 10-0, five-inning, semi-final win over Moniteau in Punxsutawney on May 27 and for the championship win. Aiden Zimmerman pitched the final three outs in the victory over the Wolves.
The Paper City boys have ripped through the season, outscoring their opponents 194-41. The Mikes have tallied 221 runs and have given up 59.
Today's winner will play the victor of the WPIAL champion Shenango (20-2) vs. District 6 runner-up Mount Union (16-6) contest. The second-place D-6 school knocked Kane out of the post-season last Wednesday. The game is being played at North Allegheny High School in Wexford.
