Elkers season comes to an end in Karns City

The Ridgway Elkers quest for a third-straight District 9 Class AA championship came to an end with a 59-34 loss at Karns City in semi-final playoff action Thursday.

A 17-0 first-quarter run enabled the Gremlins to jump out to a 19-2 lead. Sophomore Aaron Sorg hit a three-pointer for the Elkers to stop the barrage with five seconds left in the period.

The lead was extended to 33-15 at the half. Ridgway pulled within 24-13 when junior Dan Park converted a three-point play. The Elkers would get no closer.

Karns City improved to 21-2 and outscored Ridgway 26-19 in the second half. The Elkers end the season 6-9.

Chase Beghley (18), Luke Cramer (11), and Nathan Waltman (11) all scored in double-digits. Waltman scored career point 1,000 in the fourth period.

Park and sophomore Jack Benninger each scored 10 points for Ridgway. Sorg scored six, senior RJ Miller four, and senior Alex Bon and a hobbled junior Domenic Allegretto each scored two. Allegretto was injured in Tuesday’s win over Redbank Valley prior to hitting the tying bucket in the 45-43 quarter-final win.

Head coach Anthony Allegretto put all his subs in. They included senior Domenic Gaudino, junior Wil Howard, and sophomores Eric Panebianco, Dylan Goetz, Eric Gustafson, and Alex DeVallance.

It was the final game of the careers of Miller, Bon, and Guadino.

Karns City will play Coudersport for the District championship on Saturday. The Falcons defeated Keystone 63-51 on Thursday.
