Johnsonburg senior Cole Casilio - the West Super Region 160-pound runner-up - will be joined by Sheffield senior Ethan Finch the 189-pound champ, Brookville senior 285-pound champion Nathan Taylor, and Brookville junior 120-pound Owen Reinsel the third place finisher - at Friday’s PIAA Class AA championships being held at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Rams senior Nolan Shaffer finished sixth at 138-pounds and Kane sophomore Luke Ely (152-pounds) and Port Allegany’s Braeden Johnson (126-pounds) – a Smethport senior - also competed at the event. The top four finishers in each of the 13 weight classes advanced to states.

Finch ran his unblemished record to 30-0 with a 5-3 decision over Freedom Area senior Trent Schultheis (32-3) in the championship match. Taylor improved to 26-1 with a 10-2 title win over Marion Center senior Marvin Beatty (26-2). Reinsel (25-3) defeated Fort LeBoeuf freshman JoJo Przybycien 4-0 in the match for third place.

“We do a lot of communicating with the Brookville and Sheffield coaching staff. Those kids are all excellent kids. We like seeing our District 9 kids come out on top. We root for them and they root for us. We have a lot of respect for one another,” Johnsonburg head coach Mike Votano said.

Kane head coach Mike Swartwood also praised the four.

“All the kids advancing have certainly put in the time and are certainly deserving of moving on. I’ve had had the pleasure of being in the same room as Ethan Finch and Cole Casilio and they’re nice kids. They are both students of the game. They seek out better competition at tournaments in the off-season,” he said. “They’re both excellent athletes. They’ve paid their dues and earned the right to go down there and get their medals. I definitely see them being high up on the podium.”

It is the second-straight trip to the state championships for all four. Finch finished sixth at least year’s tournament at 182-pounds and competed at Hershey in 2019 at 170-pounds. Taylor finished fourth at last year’s championships at 220-pounds. Reinsel was the fourth-place finisher last year at 113-pounds and travelled to the championships as a freshman at 106-pounds.

“This is Pennsylvania wrestling. Some of the top wrestlers in the country were competing.  It doesn’t get any better than this. If you can compete at this level, place, and move on to the state championships you’re one heck of a wrestler,” Votano said.
