A few years ago, the Johnsonburg Community Center was nearly shut down. As we enter the new year of 2022, this community center has plenty to offer for the people of Johnsonburg and Elk County and is continuing to grow.

Tara Poague, who works at the Johnsonburg Community Center, gave us some insight into what all goes on there.

“I just started here in May of 2021, so I’m still learning the ropes, but I think a lot of people don’t know that we have a pool. It’s our biggest accessory to the building, especially now in the winter. We have open swim times so people can go on our website to check that out. I’m not sure if there are too many people in Ridgway or St. Marys that know we had one before.”

Poague added that the indoor pool is one of the largest in our area, and one of the oldest as well. They offer aqua fit classes every Tuesday night and are trying to acquire a sound system so that kids can have pool parties there if they so choose.

A popular attraction to the JCC is the fitness center along with the conference rooms for hosting events and meetings.

“The fitness rooms are a big hit, and you can have twenty-four seven access to it as long as you have a key to get into the building, '' Poague said.  This building is also always available to rent out for bridal showers, birthday parties, or whatever you may have going on. We have a couple conference rooms too that people use for meetings all the time.”

For the past three years, it is estimated that volunteers put around three-thousand hours the past three years to save the Johnsonburg Community Center, according to Poague.

There is a gym inside the community center, where local school sports teams can hold practices, especially during the winter months. On the second floor of the community center, they have their “Honor Wall,” which is a recognition of those who served in the military that are from Elk and McKean counties.

Poague knows how important it is to have a community center in Johnsonburg.

“It’s the heart of our town. We almost got shut down, so I don’t know what people would’ve done without it. Everybody can come here and do what they want or need to do, and its easy access right in the middle of town.”

You can follow the Johnsonburg Community Center on Facebook for the latest updates on what fundraisers or events they have coming up. You can call them at (814) 965-2010 or head on over to 600 Market Street in Johnsonburg. They are open from 8 a.m. through 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and the pool is open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for morning swimming on Saturdays.
