Renovations uncover storied past

Recent renovations to the former assessment office in the Elk County Courthouse have uncovered glimpses of the county's long forgotten past. The courthouse, reportedly completed in 1880, had a very different look inside the facility versus today's building."Back in the 1970s there were major renovations done to the courthouse and they tore out a Victorian hardwood winding staircase and they put in the aluminum and plastic steps, and in the 1970s it was all about energy efficiency and urban renewal," said Elk County Commissioner Dan Freeburg. "Most everything was gutted but we didn't know if any part of this was saved. We were putting a door into this restroom to accommodate the other construction necessary for the new domestic relations office when we discovered a perfectly preserved wall of marble and ceramic tile."
