For the first time in the game’s four years the Pennsylvania boys defeated New York in the annual Corporate Cup NY/PA Soccer Showcase Sunday at Bradner Stadium in Olean, New York. Following the 4-1 win the PA girls won 3-2 to earn a second-straight win.
The Keystone State boys came out fast and furious scoring two goals in the game’s first 7:34. Bradford Senior Colton Swanson the game’s MVP scored the first of his two goals just under six minutes in to make it 1-0. Swanson’s teammate senior Isaiah Pingie scored on a rebound at 37:26 to make it 2-0. After a goal by Ellicottville senior Jack Snyder 2:26 later Swanson scored his second goal with 19:45 remaining in the first half. Curwensville sophomore Jacob Mullins tallied the final goal of the game with 12 seconds remaining before two minutes of extra time were added in the opening half.
At last Wednesday’s practice Pennsylvania head coach T.J. Weaver of Elk County Catholic didn’t reveal much about his game plan but knew his team was wired for a fast start. “We told you guys we didn’t want to give anything away. The secret was to come out hard and fast. It’s something we haven’t done the last few years where we let them come to us and this year we went to them and it was good. I’m very proud, pleased and happy. PA needed this win,” said the head coach who was an assistant for last year’s team which lost 4-2.
Johnsonburg senior striker Clay Zilkofski, St. Marys junior striker Vinicius Nunes, Kane senior defender Mason Feikls, and his Wolves teammate sophomore midfielder Josh Greville also donned the black PA jerseys.
An elated Weaver couldn’t say enough about the effort his team gave Sunday. “The kids played well in all aspects from the (goal) keepers and midfield throughout everybody gave a great effort,” he said.
Nunes received the Pennsylvania Sportsmanship Award. ECC assistant Alex O'Neill was a member of Weaver's staff.
