Mary Lou Knapp DiNardo

Mary Lou Knapp DiNardo, 80, of 424 Water Street Extension, Johnsonburg, died early Thursday morning, March 7, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a brief illness.She was born on May 7, 1932 in Johnstown, daughter of the late LaRue and Mildred Hunter Knapp. She had been married to John Murphy II and the late George DiNardo.She resided in Johnsonburg most of her life. She graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1950, and graduated from Syracuse University in 1954 with a bachelor of science in English and a minor in Art. She received a master's degree in Education in 1970 from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. She was a member of the Johnsonburg Presbyterian Church and then the Johnsonburg United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She was a past member of the Johnsonburg Area School Board. She enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, art, classical music and watching "Jeopardy." She was employed by the Bradford Area School District from 1969 to 1974. She was a substitute teacher for the Johnsonburg Area School District for 10 years. She was also employed by the Northern Tier Community Action Committee for five years and the Green Thumb Program for several years. She is survived by two daughters, Tana Murphy Mulligan of Chester, N.Y. and Sarah DiNardo Grunthaner and her husband Shawn of Johnsonburg; three grandchildren, Lia Mulligan and her fiance Alex Fiero of Tuxedo, N.Y., and Zoey and Quaid Grunthaner, both of Johnsonburg; a step-grandson, Dylan Grunthaner; two stepdaughters, Mary Catherine Frey of Johnsonburg and Diane, Mrs. Tom "Hummer" McAlee of Pearland, Texas; four step-grandchildren, Mitzie Spangler, Marie Stine, Krista Runge and Tammy Locklear; a niece, Holly Gasser; and three nephews, Chris, Bruce, and Doug Knapp.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John Patrick Murphy III in 1981; a brother, LaRue Knapp; and a sister, Sally Knapp.A funeral service for Mary Lou Knapp DiNardo will be conducted at the Anthony Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Monday at 7 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Jay Tennies, pastor of the Johnsonburg United Methodist Church.Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg.
