Marcella K. Steger Wonderly

Marcella K. Steger Wonderly, 94, formerly of 423 Hickory St., Ridgway, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at Highland View Health Care in Brockway. She was born March 25, 1918, in Ridgway, daughter of Andrew and Margaret Forester Steger. She married Neil E. Wonderly on July 10, 1941, at St. Leo’s Rectory. He proceeded her in death on June 29, 1969. Marcella graduated from St. Leo’s School in 1936, and from St. Thomas School of Nursing in 1939. She was employed at Kaul Memorial Hospital in St. Marys and after her marriage, she was employed at Elk County General Hospital in Ridgway, retiring in 1983. She lived during the depression, becoming a very creative individual. She was an excellent seamstress, from wedding dresses, baptism outfits and bibs, her children’s clothes, drapes and other household items. She also enjoyed her “puttering” outdoors. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, served on the board of the Ridgway Ambulance, Nurse’s Club, the Elite Group of Retired Nurses, and “Katie-no-pockets” for St. Leo’s School children. Marcella was a compassionate, caring nurse, whom many of her patients still have fond memories. She is remembered by her old neighbors as the “Med Express Nurse.”She is survived by six daughters, Margaret (Francis) Nearing and Elizabeth (Neal) Constable of Ridgway; Marian (William) Nelson of Duncansville; Sharyn (Thomas) Arch of Stow, Ohio; Patricia Fest of Hamburg, N.Y.; Lois (Benito) Acosta of Flower Mound, Texas, and one daughter-in-law, Susan Wonderly of Ridgway; 22 grandchildren, Gregory, Jeffrey, Paul, Mark, Christopher, Julie, Kenneth, Nicole, Amanda, Timothy, Kimberly, Michelle, Jennifer, Amy, Neil, Timothy, Rebecca, Paula, Andrew, Veronica, Alana and Brianna; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, and by her brother, Charles Steger of Ridgway.She was predeceased by her parents; husband; a son, Michael; four granddaughters, Sherry Wonderly, Renee Constable, and Marcy and Francine Nearing; three sisters, Anna Green, Loretta Gier, and Christine (Dena) Dahms; and by three brothers, Henry Stager, and Edward and Leo Steger.A Mass of Christian Burial for Marcella Wonderly will be celebrated at St. Leo’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Fr. Brian Vossler, pastor. Interment will be in St. Leo’s Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 19, 6-9 p.m. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to St. Leo’s School, 117 Depot St., Ridgway, PA 15853, or to charity of donor’s choice.
