Lady Elkers soccer dominates Port Allegany, 9-3

To say Ridgway girls soccer is scoring goals in bunches would be an understatement. The Lady Elkers put up a season-high in goals as Ridgway overwhelmed Port Allegany with a 9-3 victory Monday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School. “Our offense took control,” Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena said. “They (Port Allegany) did score first. We answered back right away. The girls are just up, they’re playing. Everything right now is all positive, very positive. I just got so many offensive threats, I just want to run with it.” Ridgway freshman striker Jenna DeAngelo had her first hat trick for the Lady Elkers. Senior striker Rhianon Fowler and right winger Angela DeAngelo each had two goals. Ashley Imbrogno and Paige Danekas added one goal apiece for Ridgway. Port Allegany would be the team to get off to a good start, scoring in the seventh minute. Sophomore forward Lynae Delacour would chip the ball in from around 15 yards out to give the Lady Gators a 1-0 lead. Maddalena said the players have had a tough stretch recently with six games in the past eight days. “We were a little flat, I’d say the first 15 minutes we were flat,” Maddalena said. “They’re sore, they’re hurting. We’re off [Tuesday], we got Smethport Wednesday. All in all, they’re just jelling as a team, coming together. As long as we stay healthy, we’ll be in that upper group for districts.” Ridgway would answer less than two minutes later on a goal from Lady Elker right winger Angela DeAngelo. Olivia Cerroni, Fowler and Jenna DeAngelo all helped in the buildup to Ridgway’s first goal of the match. Ridgway would then go on a run of five straight goals, including three in the last 20 minutes of the first half. Angela DeAngelo would take a shot from about 25 yards out which would go off the post and bounce to Fowler who would score the uncontested goal for a 2-1 lead. Fowler added another goal off another assist from Angela DeAngelo two minutes later as Ridgway extended the advantage to 3-1. Angela DeAngelo would tally her second goal of the first half on a strong shot from just outside the penalty area which went in the upper right corner for a 4-1 lead with 6:40 left in the half. Abbie Lampman assisted on Ridgway’s fourth goal of the half. In the second half, freshman Jenna DeAngelo would continue Ridgway’s strong offensive output. She scored off a Fowler assist with 33:17 left in the second half to push the lead to 5-1. She would add a goal just a minute later. She made a run down the right side, spun her defender around and ripped a shot past the Port Allegany keeper for a 6-1 Ridgway lead. Delacour would add a goal for the Lady Gators with 25:48 remaining to cut the margin to 6-2 off an assist from Somer Buchsenshutz. Jenna DeAngelo would complete the hat trick for Ridgway with 17:29 left for a 7-2 lead. “She’s a versatile player,” Maddalena said. “She can play wherever I need her and as a freshman, that’s huge.” Buchsenshutz would score for the Lady Gators with eight minutes remaining for Port Allegany’s third goal. Imbrogno tallied a goal with 1:28 remaining on a strong shot for the Lady Elkers. Danekas scored her first goal of her career with 37 seconds left to add another goal to Ridgway’s total. Ridgway (6-1) is scheduled to host Smethport at 4 p.m. Wednesday. “They’re upbeat, they’re positive, they want to win,” Maddalena said. “They want a chance at a title.”
