Lady Elkers score season-high in points

Ridgway girls basketball scored a season-high in points in a 54-36 loss to Brockway Friday night at Ridgway Area High School. The Lady Elkers were paced with 20 points from Ridgway senior Nicole Breier. "I thought Nicole played an awesome game," Ridgway coach Glenn Schauer said. "That's the Nicole we need. All five starters played really well. Offensively, we probably played our best game of the year." Brockway started off strong and led 8-0 after the first two minutes. Leann Crawford, opened with a basket on the first possession of the game and Alex Wright followed with one of her own 17 seconds later. Sara Guilyard put the Lady Rovers ahead 6-0 and Ann Moyer put Brockway up 8-0. Breier scored her first basket as she was led on a long outlet pass from Katie Oknefski to the basket for a 2-point field goal. After a Brockway free throw, Taylor Roseto was successful on a 3-point play to make the margin 9-5. Savannah Brosky of Brockway and Breier traded field goals before Guilyard and Moyer hit shots to end the first quarter with Brockway ahead 15-7. Breier and Jenni Thomas opened the second quarter with baskets as the Lady Elkers were within four at 15-11 with just over six minutes left in the second quarter. Brockway then went on a 10-2 run and led 25-13 in the latter part of the second quarter en route to a 26-17 lead at the intermission. Schauer said Brockway's full-court press was a factor in the Lady Rovers surging ahead in the second quarter. "We still can't handle the trap," Schauer said. "If we handle that better, it's probably a pretty close game. We were down by four points and they did that and we were down 10 points. We've been working on that in practice. We just have to get better."Breier and Ann Moyer traded baskets to start the third quarter, then Breier added another shot to make the margin 28-21. The Lady Rovers again had a big run as Brockway outscored Ridgway 11-2 in the middle stages of the third quarter to take a 16-point lead at 39-23. The Lady Rovers would take control of the game from there as Brockway won by 18 points, 54-36. Moyer had 14 points to lead Brockway. Julianna Esposito was the other player in double digits for Brockway as she finished with 11 points. Roseto and Thomas each had five points for the Lady Elkers as six different Ridgway players scored points in the game. Ridgway will play host to Sheffield on Tuesday. Junior varsity action is set for 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow. In Friday's junior varsity game, Brockway won by a score of 30-8.
