Lady Elkers fall to Lady Tide

The Ridgway Lady Elkers lost 3-1 to Curwensville in girls soccer action Saturday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School. After being tied at 1-1 entering halftime, a pair of Curwensville goals ultimately doomed the Lady Elkers’ chances of a victory. Ridgway struck quickly and within two minutes, the Lady Elkers had a corner kick. Amanda Maddalena struck the corner kick and had it deflected back to her for a crossing attempt. Rhianon Fowler was able to take advantage of the chaos in the penalty area and bury the ball into the net for a goal and a quick 1-0 lead. Curwensville struck again within five minutes and squared the match at 1-all. Ridgway had some one-on-one opportunities on breakaways with Curwensville goalkeeper Tiffany Carter but Carter was up to the challenge and stopped Ridgway on multiple occasion. Ridgway had six shots in the first half but failed to cash in on quality opportunities. “We were trying to play long ball on that offsides trap,” Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena said. “That’s great goalie play, she’s a great goalie. All in all, I thought their team was just like us. I thought it was a really evenly-matched game until two breakdowns from the outside and then they had nice shots. We’re just going to take it one game at a time and hopefully get back on the winning track, which I think we will.”Coach Maddalena felt not scoring on those chances really hurt their chances of beating an elite team such as Curwensville. “Against a good team, when you have that opportunity, you have to finish at least 50 percent of those one-on-one opportunities because this is what happens,” coach Maddalena said. They left a good team like Curwensville hanging. Curwensville is a very good team. They are a very well-coached team. It was a great game. They dominated possession on us but it could have been 3-1 at the half. We missed some opportunities which leaves them hang and it bites us. It’s the simple things, we have to put a team away. We had an opportunity to put the team away. I thought their keeper did a tremendous job.” Ridgway travels to play Kane at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
