Lady Elkers doomed by two big innings

Ridgway softball took an early lead but could not hang on in an 11-3 loss to Curwensville. After an opening run by Curwensville, Ridgway would score three runs in the home half of the first inning. Jenni Thomas and Jenna Hoffman were walked to lead off the inning and Melissa Wehler reached as the indecision on the mound by Curwensville pitcher Tierra Shope left the bases loaded with no one out. After a flyout, Sydney Kovalyak hit a sacrifice fly to score Thomas and tie the game. Morgan Herzing struck out but reached first on a throwing error by Curwensville on a dropped third strike. Hoffman and Wehler scored on the play as Ridgway led 3-1 after the first inning. The middle innings were dominated by strong pitching from Taylor Roseto. Roseto pitched the first four innings before giving way due to being on a pitch count in a recovery from injury. Roseto struck out seven as no runs were scored until the fifth inning. "Taylor pitched well, she gave up one unearned run in the first inning," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. "For a couple more weeks, we have her on a pitch count. We'd rather have her later in the year than now so we're trying to take it easy on her and see how she feels because we have another game [today]."Curwensville's bats began to wake up as Madison Peterman roped a single to center and reached third on a 2-base error in center. Tiffany Carter would single home Peterman to cut the margin to one at 3-2. Molly Demchak would single and Cheyenne Pentz reached on an error in right to score Carter and tie the game. Sarah Wriglesworth singled and Abby Johnson would score pinch runner Melanie Morrison for a 4-3 Curwensville lead. Megan Barrett singled to score Pentz and Wriglesworth for a 6-3 lead for the Golden Tide. Gerber II said defensive errors hurt the Lady Elkers and didn't help Hoffman in a relief pitching role. "And it wasn't Jenna's fault either, there were a lot of mistakes in the field," Gerber II said. Curwensville then added another 5-spot in the seventh inning. Wriglesworth was hit with a pitch to start the inning and she would eventually score on a long single from Johnson. Hannah Bressler reached base on a bunt single and Taylor Goodman would also single to plate Johnson. Carter would single home a pair of runs in Bressler and Shope while Demchak hit a long double which fell just short of a home run. The double would score Carter as the Lady Tide would lead 11-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. "Our first four innings, we gave up one run to a quality team," Gerber II said. "We just had two bad innings. You can deal with one or two but the crooked numbers kill you." Gerber II said the Lady Elkers had chances to increase the lead while Roseto was on the mound. With two outs, Ridgway began a rally as Hoffman walked and Wehler singled. But Curwensville pitcher Shope was able to get a groundout to end the threat. In the bottom of the fifth, Ashley Viglione walked and Kovalyak reached on a Shope error. "We got people on, we couldn't get that hit," Gerber II said. Thomas, Wehler, Kovalayak and Emily Spiers all recorded hits for Ridgway while Hoffman was walked twice. Ridgway is set to play at St. Marys today for a 4 p.m. game.
