Lady Crusaders overwhelm Ridgway in 2-hit shutout

Other than back-to-back singles to start the top of the second inning, Elk County Catholic's pitching held the Lady Elkers' bats in check in a 14-0 five-inning game Friday in the first round of the Elk County Softball Tournament. The Lady Crusaders exploded for 16 hits Friday afternoon in the opening game of the tournament and brought the entire lineup to bat in each of the first three innings. The recipe for success worked as ECC did not allow a Ridgway baserunner to score. After a leadoff groundout to start the game, ECC got things started with a standup double from Jessie Ginther. She would later score on an error at first base that saw Anna Hawkins reach safely for the early 1-0 lead. After consecutive singles from Lyndsey Trumbull and Taylor Schlimm to load the bases, Kristy Hanes' sacrifice fly brought in Hawkins. After a walk to Alexa Hansen again juiced the bases, Trumbull trotted home on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead. Taylor Herzing walked Michelle Imbrogno before catching Jessie McLaughlin looking at a called third strike.Trumbull had retired the side in the first inning but allowed back-to-back singles to Ashley Viglione and Breezy Mazur to put two runners aboard. Both Trumbull coaxed Sydney Kovalyak into a groundout before striking out Taylor Roseto and Jill Gaio to end the inning.Unable to get the leadoff batter abord, ECC shrugged off a strikeout to start the inning before Ginther stroked her second double of the game. After a groundout from Hawkins, Trumbull tagged a two-run shot for a 5-0 lead. After consecutive errors at shortstop allowed two more runners aboard with two outs, Hansen and Imbrogno hit consecutive singles for a 7-0 lead. A lineout to second base by Jessie McLaughlin ended the inning.Despite an error a second base to allow Jenni Thomas to reach first base safely, Trumbull struck out the next three batters for a six-strikeout performance in three innings of work.ECC broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning to take a 12-0 lead. A leadoff triple from Hannah McGowan followed by a single from Ginther put the eighth run on the scoreboard. After Schlimm reached on a single, Hanes came up with a two-out single to plate Hawkins and Schlimm for a 10-0 lead. Hansen, Imbrogno and McLaughlin followed up with singles to put two more runs on the board for a 12-0 advantage.Taylor DaCanal relieved Trumbull in the fourth and fifth innings and retired six in a row.In the bottom of the fourth inning, a one-out double by Trumbull put a runner aboard and an error in right field put runners at the corners. A groundout by Julie Scacchitti scored Trumbull for the 13-0 lead and Hansen later stroked a single to bring in courtesy runner Sam Smith to go up 14-0.DaCanal shut down the side in the top of the fifth inning to preserve the five-inning victory.Individual statistics:Ridgway AB R H BIMelissa Wehler 2 0 0 0Jenna Hoffman 1 0 0 0Brianna Stenta 1 0 0 0Ashley Viglione 2 0 1 0Breezy Mazur 2 0 1 0Sydney Kovalyak 2 0 0 0Taylor Roseto 2 0 0 0Jill Gaio 2 0 0 0Jenni Thomas 1 0 0 0Totals 15 0 2 0 ECC AB R H BIHannah McGowan 3 1 1 0Jessie Ginther 4 2 3 1Anna Hawkins 3 2 0 1Lyndsey Trumbull 4 3 3 2Taylor Schlimm 2 2 2 0Kristy Hanes 1 2 1 3Alexa Hansen 3 1 3 2Michelle Imbrogno 2 0 2 2Jessie McLaughlin 3 0 1 1Julie Scacchitti 1 0 0 1Sam Smith 0 1 0 0Totals 26 14 16 132B: Ginther 2, Trumbull. 3B: McGowen.
