Lady Crusaders down Ridgway

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders remained undefeated with a 16-0, 4-inning victory over Ridgway softball Thursday afternoon at Ridgway. On the mound, Elk County Catholic pitcher Taylor Schlimm threw a 4-inning perfect game as she retired all 12 Ridgway hitters she faced. At the plate, Sadie Viglione had a 6-RBI day, including a second-inning grand slam. "I'm not sure which was more exciting," Elk County Catholic coach Dr. Joe Coroso said. "Taylor's perfect game or Sadie's grand slam to deep center and then her headfirst slide into second base for a 2-run double. Obviously, both were great for different reasons."Taylor helped her cause at the plate with three hits and three RBI," Dr. Coroso said. "Our offense really came alive with six players having multi-hit games. Defensively, Sadie made a fine running catch in right field and Michelle Imbrogno snared a line drive at short which have gone for extra bases. Both helped preserve Taylor's perfect game." The Lady Crusaders took advantage of a pair of Ridgway errors in the first inning. Jessie Ginther reached on a Ridgway error at second base to lead off the game. After a flyout, Kristy Hanes also reached on an error. Lyndsey Trumbull singled to score Ginther and Schlimm followed with a single of her own to score another run. "We gave them too many outs," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. "You can't give a team like this five outs an inning. We just have to play better defense against these teams." The Lady Crusaders blew the game open in the second inning with an 8-run inning. Stephanie Zimmerman led off the inning with a single. After a strikeout, Ginther singled and Jena Struble roped a long double to right center field that scored Zimmerman and Ginther and upped the lead to 4-0. Kristy Hanes would single and score Struble for ECC's fifth run. Trumbull would reach on an error and Schlimm would rope another RBI single to put the lead to 6-0. Viglione then launched a grand slam over the right center field fence which put the lead at 10-0 after two innings. That scored Trumbull, Schlimm and Michelle Imbrogno for ECC. Viglione finished with six RBI to lead ECC.Imbrogno lifted a sacrifice fly in the third inning to score ECC's 11th run and Viglione followed with a 2-run double which scored Schlimm and Trumbull. Viglione Zimmerman would double to score Viglione as the Lady Crusaders led 14-0 after three innings. Trumbull would single home another run in the fourth inning and she scored on a single from Schlimm. Schlimm had three hits and three RBI while Trumbull had three hits and two RBI. Struble had a 2-hit, 2-RBI game while Hanes and Zimmerman had two hits apiece. Ridgway (0-3) is scheduled to host Brockway at 4 p.m. Monday. ECC (3-0) is at Johnsonburg for a 4:15 p.m. game Monday.
