Lady Crusaders defeat Johnsonburg Ramettes

ST. MARYS – Taylor Schlimm recorded her 11th shutout of the season on Monday afternoon at Benzinger Park as she pitched the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Johnsonburg Area High Ramettes.Schlimm gave up only three hits in the game, while striking out seven and walking no one.Kiana Myers was the losing pitcher for the Johnsonburg girls as she gave up just six hits, walked six and struck out one.Lyndsey Trumbull was the top hitter for the Lady Crusaders with a bases-loaded triple, while Schlimm recorded a home run. Kristy Hanes had a double, while Hannah McGowan, Anna Hawkins and Jenny Cappiello all had singles."We had a little 'post-prom' fatigue," said ECCHS Coach Joe Coroso. "At least that's what I hope it was today. We have most of our players giving it everything they have on every pitch offensively and defensive. Unfortunately, we have some who are not playing anywhere near their potential and this is not because of lack of talent but because of a lack of focus and effort at times. We have not played our best game yet and I wonder if they know how good they can really be this year."For Johnsonburg, Brittany Watts was the leading hitter with two singles, followed by Kassa Kocjancic with a single."We played a much better game against the Lady Crusaders today than we did last week," said Coach Melissa Myers of Johnsonburg. "We hit the ball much better, but most of the time it was right at them. Overall we showed improvement over the game on Thursday.""We are starting to come together and play like a solid team," said Myers. "I am proud of the way the girls played today. A few breaks and it could have been a different outcome."Brittany Watts opened the game for the Ramettes with a single to right field. She was then caught trying to steal second as Schlimm pitched out of the jam.In the lower half of the first, the Lady Crusaders scored four times. McGowan opened the inning with a single, but was forced out at second on Jessie Ginther's fielder's choice. Hawkins and Cappiello hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Schlimm then reached first on a fielder's choice as Ginther was forced at home. Trumbull then hit a shot to deep center field, scoring all three runners. Two walks loaded the bases again, then Trumbull came home on a passed ball to make the score 4-0, where it remained for the rest of the inning.Over the next three innings, neither team was able to generate any scoring threats. The score remained at 4-0 going into the fifth inning. Johnsonburg failed to score in the fifth, but Elk Catholic picked up a run when Schlimm hit one over the center fielder's head and turned it into a home run, making the score 5-0. With one out, Kristy Hanes hit a double but was stranded following two infield outs.Neither team was able to score again in the game and Elk Catholic went on to win 5-0.The Lady Crusaders are now 14-3 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday when they host Curwensville at Benzinger Park in a game set for 4:15 p.m. This will be senior night.Johnsonburg is 7-9 on the season and will play again today as they host Port Allegany at 4:15 p.m.Johnsonburg Area – 0Brittany Watts 3-0-2, Dani Jo Dwyer 3-0-0, Kiana Myers 3-0-0, Justis Myers 3-0-0, Taylor Harvey 3-0-0, Paige DeCecchis 2-0-0, Kassa Kocjancic 2-0-1, Cassie Biondi 2-0-0, Lydia Hefright 2-0-0.
