Lady Crusaders defeat Johnsonburg 52-39 in AML contest

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team raised their record to 2-0 on the young season as they won their home opener last night over the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 52-39 score.After Elk Catholic took a 17-8 first-period lead, the Ramettes battled back in the second quarter to take a slim 24-23 lead at the half.The second half found Elk Catholic outscoring Johnsonburg 29-15 to win the game.“This game had a feel of an early-season basketball game,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “We’re not fundamentally sound tonight, as our defense left a lot to be desired. Our rebounding was decent tonight.” “We have work to do with Kane coming in here Friday night. They are a good basketball team,” he added.Elk Catholic was led offensively by Taylor DaCanal with 15 points on six field goals and a three-for-three night from the foul line. Kristy Hanes scored 10 points on two twos and two threes.Johnsonburg was led by Kiana Myers with 11 points on three twos, one three and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Rhianon Fowler added 10 points on five field goals.Myers gave Johnsonburg the early 2-0 lead. DaCanal tied the game with two foul shots. The rest of the period went back and forth with the teams trading leads. In the final 17 seconds of the quarter, Michelle Imbrogno converted a three-point play, then hit a three at the buzzer to give Elk the 17-8 first-period lead.Two foul shots by Brittany Watts cut the Elk lead to 17-10. DaCanal scored on a putback with Hanes hitting a three, 22-10. Benson scored for the Ramettes on a putback, with Ashley Imbrogno converting a three-point play, 22-15. Fowler hit a two and Myers connected on a three, 22-20. Abbi Petrosky sank one of two foul shots for ECC, 23-20. Benson and Fowler scored in the final seconds of the second quarter as the Ramettes took a 24-23 halftime lead.Lexie Meholic sank two foul shots for ECC to open the second half. Danie Dwyer converted a three-point play as Johnsonburg led 27-25. Petrosky and Myers traded buckets, 29-27. Jena Struble connected on two threes as Elk went up 33-29 at the 3:09 mark. Morgan Onink scored on a putback for ECC, 35-29. Myers sank two foul shots, with Fowler scoring off a steal to cut Elk’s lead to 35-33. Julia Sweeney scored for Elk with two seconds remaining as Elk led 37-33 at the end of three quarters.A field goal by Hanes gave Elk the 39-33 lead to open the fourth quarter. Watts sank two foul shots for the Ramettes, 39-35. She would foul out with 6:50 left in the game. Hanes hit a two, with Imbrogno converting one of two, 42-35. Imbrogno and Benson traded buckets, 44-37 with 3:34 left. Struble and Maggie Sorg scored for the Lady Crusaders, making the score 48-37. Fowler scored for the Ramettes, 48-39. Buckets by Imbrogno and Meholic gave Elk the 52-39 victory.Elk Catholic is now 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the AML.Friday night, the Lady Crusaders host the Kane Lady Wolves in another AML contest. Game time for junior varsity is 6 p.m., followed by varsity at 7:30 p.m.
