Lady Crusader softball wins District 9-A crown

KERSEY - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team captured the District 9 Class A championship by defeating the Brockway Lady Rovers by a 4-0 score Thursday afternoon at the Fox Township Community Park in Kersey.The Lady Crusaders used a two-run home run by Lyndsey Trumbull in the second inning and a two-run double by Michelle Imbrogno in the sixth inning to account for their four runs.Taylor Schlimm went the distance on the mound for ECC for her 15th victory of the season. She gave up four hits and struck out four. Alex Wright went the distance for Brockway, giving up 10 hits, walking four and striking out one.The Lady Crusader offense was led by Schlimm with a triple and a single. Lyndsey Trumbull homered, while Abbey Bauer had three singles and Michelle Imbrogno doubled. Maddy Schneider had two singles and Jessie Ginther one.“This was certainly a day where everyone contributed and our defense excelled with no errors and Taylor’s dominance in the circle,” said ECCHS coach Joe Coroso. “Our entire infield made the routine look easy and Jessie Ginther’s hustling catch of a foul ball off the leadoff hitter’s bat in foul territory down the right field line set the tone for the day. But the catch of the day goes to Maddy Schneider in left field, backpedaling to gather in Hailey Adams’ long drive in the fifth inning.” “The only thing we could have done better was not to leave 10 on base to give us some breathing room, but a win’s a win. I’m very proud of them,” added Coroso.The top of the first inning saw Brockway go down in order. The Lady Crusaders followed suit, sending only three batters to the plate in the home half of the inning.The Lady Rovers left a runner stranded at third in the top half of the second inning. Schlimm led off the home half of the inning. Trumbull followed with a home run to left field, giving Elk the 2-0 lead. The Lady Crusaders left two runners stranded.Brockway left a runner stranded in the top of the third, while Elk left two runners on base. With one out in the top of the fourth, Savannah Brosky singled for Brockway. ECC’s second baseman caught a line drive for the second out and was able to double courtesy runner Juli Esposito off first base to end the inning. The Lady Crusaders left the bases loaded in their half of the inning.The top of the fifth inning saw the first batter fly out to catcher Kristy Hanes. The next out was recorded by Schneider in left field, with the third out being recorded on third baseman Trumbull’s throw to first base. The Lady Crusaders went down in order in their half of the inning.The top of the sixth found Brockway going down in order. With one out, Abbey Bauer singled. Schneider reached base on an infield out. Meyer was thrown out at second.
