Gerber's final home dual set for Tuesday

Ridgway head wrestling coach Gary Gerber will lead the Elkers for the final time in front of the home fans Tuesday night as Ridgway hosts Brookville. The junior high dual is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity match to follow at approximately 7 p.m.Gerber announced before the season that he will retire after this season is over. Gerber has over 430 wins to his career among a litany of coaching accomplishments. He announced the decision on Oct. 10, 2011 on "Talk of The Town" hosted by Dennis D. Heindl on 97.5 The Hound. "There comes a time when you know it's time. I'm getting older and it does wear me out," Gerber said in a November interview with The Ridgway Record previewing the season. "These kids never slow down. I enjoy working with the kids. Things always change and I think it's time. In fact, I may go out west next November and December to get away from it a little bit because I've been doing it since 1974. It's hard to walk away but you have to know when to walk away. The worst thing you can do as coaches is stay too long. You stay too long, you're not sharp, you make mistakes. I like to keep a high level of intensity. I think it's time for a younger person to jump in and take over." The dual is also a rematch of last season's District 9 Team Duals championship match, a dual Ridgway won 32-29. It was Ridgway's 600th win as a program. Ridgway enters Tuesday's dual with a 16-3 dual record.
