Forty-six students receive JAHS diplomas

The Johnsonburg Area High School Class of 2020 was presented their diplomas in an outdoor “drive-in” graduation ceremony held at the school on May 29. Seniors and families were able to listen to speeches from their vehicles and graduates were called to the stage to receive their diplomas. The normal auditorium ceremony was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The seniors incorporated the situation into their class motto – “Our 2020 vision never saw this one coming”. The ceremony was attended by students, administration, faculty, commencement speaker Mrs. JoAnn Fitch, school board members, and guests Over $282,000 in scholarships, grants, and awards were received by the new alum according to the packet issued by the school district.
Following the Pledge of Allegiance and Star-Spangled Banner class secretary, Jenna Morgan welcomed classmates and guests and introduced Fitch who gave the commencement address. The 1989 JAHS graduate, the daughter of Gildo and the late Georgia Torchia of Wilcox is a 1994 graduate of Duquesne University and holds a B.S. from the School of Pharmacy with a concentration in nuclear pharmacy. Fitch currently serves as the location pharmacy manager in Altoona for Cardinal Health as part of their Nuclear and Precision Health Solutions division covering central Pennsylvania from the New York to Maryland borders. She is married to Michael Fitch, the son of Philip and Patricia Fitch of Meffert Run Road in Wilcox. The couple, which has been married for 24 years, lives in Duncansville and has three children Maddison, who resides in Berlin, Germany; Reghan of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Trent a student at Hollidaysburg Area High School.
The class of 2020 Valedictorian and class president Kolton Mehalko addressed the gathering with his speech titled “Memories Made Together”. Salutatorian and class vice-president Dan Dillinger followed with his speech titled “Follow Your Dreams”.
Guidance Counselor Mrs. Becky Pistner provided information on the Class of 2020 and, scholarships, grants and awards were announced. According to Pistner, 24 of the 46 graduates will be continuing their education at a four-year college/university, 12 will be attending a two-year training or trade school program, one is joining the Armed Forces and nine will be joining the job market. Johnsonburg Area School District Superintendent of Schools Dennis Crotzer introduced the class and High School Principal Ray Kelly, School Board President Mrs. Barbara Thorwart, Vice-president David Allegretto, and board members Mrs. Janice Carnovale, Mrs. Tracy Crowe, Mrs. Sarah Grunthaner, Mrs. Corine Christoff, Mrs. Courtney Dunworth, Mrs. Nikki Zimmerman, Andy Leslie, and Senior Class Advisor Mrs. Sandy Charney helped distribute diplomas.
Morgan issued the farewell and the Recessional was Trace Atkins’ – “You’re Gonna Miss This.”
