RIDGWAY – A cool wet Monday morning started off the October 7 Return Day at the Elk County Courthouse.
Elk County District Attorney Shawn T. McMahon, along with Assistant District Attorney Thomas Coppolo, brought a full docket of 87 cases to the court. The vast majority of defendants scheduled for a preliminary arraignment waived the reading of the charges at the outset, and a good number of continuances brought down the total cases down to 40.
This Return Day was the last McMahon will preside over as prosecutor, as he will become President Judge of both Elk and Cameron Counties in a ceremony at the Cameron County Courthouse on Friday. Coppolo, the current assistant district attorney, will take his oath and become the District Attorney of Elk County in a ceremony on Thursday.
Steven Steudler, in a plea deal before he would face a jury trial, pleaded guilty on Monday to the charge of drug delivery resulting in death. Through the plea deal, Steudler was sentenced to 4 1/2 to 10 years in state prison.
