Elk County Commissioners hold mid-October meeting

Staff Writer

The Elk County Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. in Conference Room #2 at the Courthouse Annex in Ridgway. Present at the meeting were all three Commissioners, Dan Freeburg, Janis Kemmer, and Matt Quesenberry, along with Chief Clerk Lee Neureiter, Deputy Chief Clerk Samantha Beaver, and Warden Greg Gebauer.
The minutes of previous meetings and the agenda were quickly approved by the commissioners.
Warden Greg Gebauer proposed hiring a per-diem, part-time nurse for the Elk County Prison.
One of the current nurses wished to go to an on-call status and the warden has agreed. Carrie Overturf of Kersey has passed all the necessary checks, and the commissioners agreed to hire her pending approval at the Prison Board meeting in December.
Gebauer also reported that the prison is filled to capacity with some 86 inmates, 25 of which are women. As the prison only has female quarters for 14 women, the rest are in custody in surrounding jails, most in Jefferson County.
