Edna M. "Snooky" Auman

Edna M. "Snooky" Auman, 88, of 352 Church St., died Friday afternoon, Nov. 4, 2011, at her residence. She was born Aug. 1, 1923 in St. Marys, the daughter of the late Herbert and Mary Wolfel Dippold. On May 16, 1945, in Pawling, N.Y., she married James O. Auman, who survives. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1941. She had worked at Sylvania for five years and, along with her husband, owned Auman's Grocery Store from 1945 until retirement in 2009.She was a member of the St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's Church Altar Society, Elk Regional Health System Auxiliary, Golden Grads of ECCHS, a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society, and the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and enjoyed her family and friends immensely. Snooky had a great love for flowers and especially roses. She was a beautiful person and always kind and gentle. She enjoyed traveling and going out to dinner. She waited on customers in their grocery store for 64 years and delighted in talking with them. In May of 1945, when her husband Jim was recovering from wounds sustained in WWII, Snooky and Rita Auman traveled to Pawling, N.Y., to the hospital to visit him. On May 8, V-E Day was declared. Snooky then told him that he said when the war was over, they would get married and reminded him of that. They were married one week later in a small chapel in Pawling, with all of her husband's Army buddies in attendance. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Margaret Ann Gabler (Michael) of St. Marys, Katherine Mary Muth (Larry) of Ridgway, Barbara Ann Little (Rich) of St. Marys, and Patricia Mary Grabill (Steve) of Mechanisburg; 10 grandchildren, the Rev. Michael Gabler OSB, Lori Ligenfelter (Alan), Sean Gabler (Tina), Melanie Meyer (Matt), Douglas Muth, Katie Muth, Henry Hoehn (Amy), Christopher Little, Nick Grabill, and Laura Grabill; seven great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margie Auman (Robert) of St. Marys, Sister Mary James Dippold OSB of the St. Joseph Monastery, and Jeanne Gaskill of st. Marys; and two brothers, Donald Dippold (Mary) of St. Marys and John (Jack) Dippold (Carol) of St. Marys.Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Dippold and in infancy Raymond Dippold. A Mass of Christian Burial for Edna M. "Snooky" Auman will be celebrated in the St. Mary's Church on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Gabler, OSB, her grandson, as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
