Ridgway Area High School graduate Bryce Barclay and Elk County Catholic High School graduate Erick Mader received the Ridgway Borough scholarship, awarded at the borough council meeting Monday evening.
Two $25,000 scholarships are awarded every year to qualifying students.
According to Borough Manager Paul McCurdy, the borough initiated the scholarship to encourage students to apply what they learn in college and help develop Ridgway into a more positive community.
To apply, students had to submit an essay discussing what they planned on studying in college and how they could use their education to make a difference in their community. Padraic McGrath, Marie Newman and Dolores Deen reviewed the scholarship applications and chose students.
In addition to awarding scholarships, council approved Russell Standard Corporation’s bid to seal and coat certain streets within the borough.
