Area wrestlers ready for regional championships

Ridgway and Johnsonburg wrestlers are ready for the PIAA Class AA Northwest Regional Championships which begin today at Sharon High School. At 119 pounds, Corey Bush (31-2) of Ridgway (3-time regional qualifier) will start in the quarterfinals against the winner of the match between Zack Cokely (12-14), the fourth-place finisher from District 9 and Jesse Rivera (24-11) of Grove City, the fourth-place finisher in District 10. In the 125-pound bracket, Jesse Wolfe (28-2) of Johnsonburg opens in the quarterfinals against the winner of the preliminary bout between Garret Hildebrand (23-12, D-9 4th) of Redbank Valley and Adam Sallot (30-7, D-10 4th) of Harborcreek. Wolfe can only meet Mason Beckman of Reynolds (42-0) in the final if they both advance that far. At 135, Slade Horner of Ridgway (28-6) will take on either Riley Smith (27-12, D-10 3rd place) of Fort LeBoeuf or Sam Colbert (26-12, D-9 4th) of Oswayo Valley in the quarterfinal. In that same bracket, Max Zimmerman (23-4, D-9 2nd) opens against Corey Voohis (24-10, D-10 3rd) of North East in the preliminary round. The winner there faces Vinnie Vignone (17-16 D-8 1st) in the quarterfinal. Kyle Caggiano (31-6, D-9 3rd) opens in the 140-pound bracket against Garret Smith (33-6, D-10 3rd) of Seneca in the prelims. The winner gets Rob Redman of Langley (17-12, D-8 1st) in the quarterfinals. At 152, Ridgway’s Jake Himes (25-9, D-9 4th) faces Randy Perkins (33-7, D-10 4th) in the preliminary round. The winner gets Alex Gular (30-8, D-9 1st) in the quarterfinals. D.J. Skraba (29-7 D-9 1st) of Ridgway faces the winner of Ryan Kio (33-9 D-9 3rd) of Port Allegany and Austin Andrews (26-11 D-10 4th) of Cochranton in the quarterfinals at 160 pounds. Chad Quail (18-17 D-9 3rd) takes on Greg Reinke (38-7 D-10 3rd) of Union City in the prelims with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals to face Zachary Brinkley (26-5 D-9 2nd) Brockway. Wolfe is a 4-time regional qualifier. Bush, Caggiano and Skraba are both 3-time regional qualfiers. Zimmerman is a 2-time regional qualifier. Himes, Horner and Quail are first-time regional qualifiers.There are 12 in each weight class this year with the addition of District 8. The top four from District 9, top six from District 10 and top two from District 8 make up the 12 teams. Action begins with preliminaries starting at 4:30 p.m. and the quarterfinals to follow. Saturday’s schedule starts at 9 a.m. with the semifinals and first round of consolations. The second round of consolations starts at noon. Consolation finals are set for 4 p.m. with the finals to start at 6 p.m.
