LaVerne J. "Skinny" Gorske, 92, of 426 Willow St., Johnsonburg, died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2010, at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home in St. Marys following a short illness.
He was born March 11, 1918 in Erie, son of the late Paul and Agnes Bilgere Gorske. He married Lucille Williams on July 26, 1940 and she preceded him in death on July 15, 1994.
Formerly of Erie, he resided in Johnsonburg most of his life and attended Johnsonburg High School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church and one of the founders of the Rolfe Beagle Club in Johnsonburg, where he served as secretary and Field Trial Secretary for over 40 years.
He was a WWII Army veteran, serving as a Tech Sergeant overseas with the K-9 Corps and Special Services in North Africa and Italy.
He was employed by New York and Pennsylvania Company - Penntech Papers for over 40 years, retiring in 1980.
He is survived by three grandsons, Richard L. "Rick" Gorske and his wife Betty of Johnsonburg, Roger A. Gorske and his wife Cheryl of Ridgway and Randy L. Gorske and his wife Darlene of Cambridge Springs; nine great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Orrin "Skip" Gorske; two brothers, George and Robert "Coach" Gorske and by a sister in infancy.
A memorial service for the late LaVerne J. Gorske will be conducted at the Anthony Ferragine Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Rev. Davis Wilson, pastor of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg.
Interment will be in Wardvale Methodist Cemetery, Johnsonburg.
Friends will be received at the Anthony Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg on Friday morning from 9 to 10 a.m.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.
