Stephen Augustine Mishenko, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Snyder Memorial Nursing Home, Marienville.
He was born Sept. 22, 1932 at Clarion Avenue in the Vennard Island area of Johnsonburg. He was the son of the late Stephen J. and Anna (Kasaback/Kasubjak) Mishenko of Johnsonburg. He was a resident of Johnsonburg all his life.
He attended Holy Rosary School, West End School and the Johnsonburg High School.
On Dec. 31, 1957 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, he married Cecilia Ann "Tootsie" Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nelson of Long Level. They were married for 50 years; he will now join his beloved wife forever. Cecilia died July 17, 2008. They had many friends and will be missed by them all.
Steve “Chippy”, as he was known, was a member of the PA National Guard Infantry, enlisting Sept 5, 1950 at Ridgway. He served with E. Co. 112th Inf. Regt. 28th. Div. in Germany for seven months, receiving the Occupational Medal, Germany. He was discharged July 12, 1952.
Steve was employed at the Johnsonburg Paper Mill in 1956 where he worked in the woodyard, paper, soda, sulphite, trucking, stock prep., winders, and power departments until retiring in 1988.
He enjoyed working on his crafts but really enjoyed taking hikes in the nearby forest and mapping the area. Many people still enjoy his sketches of the B&O and Vennard Island area that he drew among other parts of town. The railroad was of special interest since his father worked at the B&O for 33 years.
He is survived by his four sisters, Mrs. Willis E. (Julia) Hulings, Clarendon, Miss Margaret Mishenko, Pinecrest, St. Marys, Mrs. Francis J. (Marie) Biel, and Mrs. Roger A. (Delores) Padasak, St. Marys.
He is also survived by many Mishenko family nieces and nephews and Cecilia Nelson’s families, and will be missed by all.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Johnsonburg, with Father David Wilson, celebrant.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Ubel Funeral Home, Johnsonburg.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg/Wilcox Servicemen’s Detail. Military members are asked to assemble at the funeral home, 10:15 a.m., Saturday.
Interment will be next to his loving wife in the McKean Memorial Park, Lafayette.
The family suggests memorials to Elk Haven Nursing Home or Silver Creek Terrace, St. Marys.
