Richard Marcel Smith, 77, of Bridge Street, Johnsonburg, died suddenly at home Friday, May 24, 2013.
He was born on Dec. 30, 1935 in Kane, the son of Dewey Marcel and Linda Wilhelmina (Anderson) Smith. A Johnsonburg resident, he graduated from Wilcox Area High School and Penn State University, with both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree.
On June 14, 1958, he married Gwendolyn Preston Smith, who passed away March 28, 2010.
Rich was active in many organizations in the community. He was most known for his work with the Johnsonburg Public Library, where he has been Board President for many years. An avid genealogist, he was the founder and first president of the Elk County Genealogy Society and the American Swedish Historical Museum's Genealogy Club. He was also an officer of the Elk County Community Foundation and several Johnsonburg-based associations.
Rich was a dedicated teacher and his proudest professional accomplishment was serving as Program Leader and Professor of Business Administration at the Penn State University, DuBois Campus.
Rich is survived by his daughter, Adrienne Danielle Jonsson; his son-in-law, Lars Ruben Lennartsson Jonsson; and his two beloved grandchildren, Renee Christina Karolin Smith Jonsson and Ronan Alexander Daniel Smith Jonsson, all of Kennett Square; as well as his sister, Phyllis (Harold) Hagman of Kane; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James Nevin Smith; and a sister, Eileen Beverly Rhoads.
Visitation will be held at the Ubel Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Thursday from 10-11 a.m. Funeral Services will be at the Ubel Funeral Home on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Stephen Fair officiating. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Rich asked that any donations be made to the Johnsonburg Public Library.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg/Wilcox Servicemen’s Detail. Military members are asked to assemble 10:45 a.m., Thursday at the Funeral Home.
