Louis L. Gerhart, 87, of Folino Drive, Wilcox, died Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born December 18, 1925 in Kane, son of the late Louis L. and Sarah (Heasley) Gerhart, Sr.
On January 28, 1950 he married Elizabeth J. “Betty” Raubenstrauch, and she survives.
Born and raised in Kane, he lived in Johnsonburg from 1950-54, the DuBois area from 1954-97 and has been a Wilcox resident since 1997. He was a graduate of Kane High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy as Gunners Mate 3rd Class during WWII from 1944–46, including the liberation of the Philippines. He worked at Diamond Casting of Johnsonburg from 1946-52, was owner/operator of the Rhododendron Bar & Grill of Sykesville from 1968-76, and worked as truck driver with Hall Motor Transit for 35 years. He was Protestant by faith, a member and past commander of the Sykesville American Legion, member of DuBois VFW, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Wilcox Sportsmen’s.
In addition to his wife, Elizabeth J. “Betty” (Raubenstrauch) Gerhart of Wilcox, he is survived by three brothers, Robert Gerhart of Kane, Francis “Manny” Gerhart of Kane, and John Gerhart of California; three sisters, Pearl “Sissy” Benson of Kane, Jane Read of Kane, and Gloria Swanson of Kane; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Kwiatowski; and three brothers, Milton, Thomas, and Frank Gerhart.
Funeral services for Louis L. Gerhart will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at the Ubel Funeral Home, Johnsonburg, with Father David Wilson officiating.
Visitation will be held at the Ubel Funeral Home in Johnsonburg on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. and Wednesday from 10-11 a.m.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg/Wilcox Serviceman’s Detail. Military members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Wednesday at 10:45 a.m.
Interment will be at Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville.
