ST. MARYS – Even though donations received in this year's Coaches vs. Cancer campaign at the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament fell short of matching last year's total of $1,200, more than $800 was still able to be raised to benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, according to Roben Daghir, volunteer survivor for outreach and awareness.
"It was wonderful," Daghir said of the community's continued support of promoting cancer awareness.
As in the past, attendees had the opportunity to make a donation for a chance to win a basketball autographed by either members of all four girls' basketball teams or all four boys' squads. The basketballs were given away at the conclusion of the team's respective championship events. According to Daghir, the winner of the girls' ball was Bob Bauer and the boys' ball went to Cliff Miller.
For the second year in a row, donations were also collected as a means of voting for the favorite boys' and girls' basketball coaches within the county. Last year's winners both reclaimed the titles as Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader head coach Ken Pistner was named the favorite girls' coach for the second year in a row and Ridgway Elkers head coach Anthony Allegretto held on to his title as favorite boys' basketball coach. Both coaches will once again have their names engraved on plaques that will be on display at their respective high schools until the 2013 tournament.
