Alan R. “Dick” Hummel, 67, of Winchester, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012 in Winchester.
He was born April 19, 1945 in Port Huron, Mich., the son of the late Frederick D. and Jane Irene Cataline Hummel. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and also one in Business in 1972 from Salem College and a master of business administration degree from Shenandoah College and Conservatory in 1985.
Dick worked for Federal-Mogul Friction Products (Abex) before establishing Heavy Duty Friction Consultant, Inc. which he owned and served as president. He was also granted six patents during his life.
He was a race-car driver and defensive driving instructor at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia.
He was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church and The Oglesby Sunday School Class.
He married Cheryl Groves Willingham on Dec. 24, 1997 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Dick is survived by a sister, Diane L. Pensinger, of Chambersburg; two brothers, Michael D. Hummel, of Arkansas and Fred D. Hummel Jr. of Indiana.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Balis Hummel, and their two daughters, Alicia L. Hummel, and Melanie G. Hummel; and their son, Andrew Hummel.
There will be a visitation on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home, 228 S. Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester, Va. 22601
A funeral service will be held at Braddock Street Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012 with Rev. Kirk Nave and Rev. Sara E. Pugh officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be W. Benjamin Willingham, Steve Pensinger, Brian Pensinger, Dennis Hinkle, Michael Groves, David Groves, Doug Sardelis, and Patrick Poston.
Honorary pallbearers will be James McFarland and Wendell Pete Whitlock.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the SPCA, Henry & William Evans Home for Children and Rouss Fire Department.
