JOHNSONBURG – In response to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's biggest push in 15 years to institute healthier lunches in schools across the country, the Johnsonburg Area School District is already ahead of the game.
Students across the state are now exposed to federally mandated menus that require more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes.
JASD Board Secretary Lisa J. Mahoney discussed the new food guidelines during the latest school board meeting.
"Most of the changes that are being implemented we've already done several of them," Mahoney said. "We have been phasing things in long before we were required. We have removed salt from our tables and our menus for several years - that's not something we just did. We have always offered kids more fruits and vegetables. We've always offered low-fat milk or fat-free milk and we have repeatedly had additional fruits and vegetables available so a lot of what our kids are seeing isn't really that different."
