A quintet of Ridgway Elker golfers turned in a combined total of 189 strokes, believed to be a new school record as they toppled visiting St. Marys, who finished with 233 shots on Thursday at Laurel Mill Golf Course in Ridgway.
The Elkers were led by Josh Roselli, whose 2-under 34 earned him medalist honors on the day. He was closely contested by teammate Josh Mitchell who turned in an under-par performance with 35 strokes. Mitchell Gilmore followed with a 39, Jake Klawuhn with 40 strokes, and T.J. Schlimm got up and down for a 41 to round out the scoring.
"Although we believe this to be a school record, more impressive is the way this group continues to pick each other up," said Ridgway head boys varsity golf coach Dave Zawatski. "Jesse Reynolds, and Matt Aiello, two of our seniors, were co-medalists the last two matches but [Thursday], they struggled and the rest of the team came through."
Aiello and Reynolds were both on the course but recorded 42s and did not factor into the top five scores for Ridgway. Mitchell Stark followed with a 43.
"We challenged the guys the other day at practice to have somebody go low for us," Zawatski said. "Josh [Roselli] and Josh [Mitchell] gave us those rounds under par."
St. Marys finished with 233 strokes. Rudy Gleixner led the team with 44 strokes followed by Quinn Cunningham with 46, Owen Schreiber with 47, Justin Beimel with 47, and Dylan Gallagher with 49. Kyle Pistner and Garrett Wendel scored rounds of 52 and 55, respectively, but did not factor into the final team scoring for the day.
"We have a huge stretch coming up over the next three weeks and as impressive as the team has been at times, you're only as good as your last shot in this game," Zawatski said. "We look forward to playing in a big match at Elk County Catholic on Wednesday."
Note: Tuesday's scheduled match against ECC has been moved to Wednesday at Bavarian Hills and Thursday's scheduled match at home against Kane has been moved to Friday. Starting time for both matches will be 3:30 p.m.
