ST. MARYS – State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) will be holding a ceremony to recognize Vietnam War-era veterans in his legislative district and is asking area residents who served during that time to contact his office.
"What we're doing is we're putting out a call for all Vietnam veterans in the 75th District to just get ahold of us so we can make sure that we've got their name, their contact information," Gabler said. "We are working on getting the event together, but the details of the event will somewhat be driven by the number of responses that we get, and then we'll be ready at that point to put out invitations to each of the folks that contacted us.
"I think it's very important that as a community we come together and recognize those people who have made sacrifices who have made our way of life possible and have made all of the great things in our communities possible."
Gabler is requesting that Vietnam-era veterans from any branch of service contact his constituent service office in either St. Marys (814-781-6301) or DuBois (814-375-4688) as soon as possible with their information. Veterans are asked to register by Friday, July 13. The 75th Legislative District encompasses all of Elk County and DuBois, Troutville Borough, and Brady, Huston, Sandy and Union townships in Clearfield County.
Gabler held a similar recognition event for Korean War veterans a few years ago and said he feels it is important to recognize key points throughout American history where people have sacrificed themselves in service to their country.
"In this case, I believe it's time for us to focus on the Vietnam War veterans, the sacrifices they've made for the community, how that has changed their lives, and what they've done for their country, to be willing to stand up for us and for freedom around the world," Gabler said.
