Jane G. Sorg, 89, of 561 Rock St., St. Marys, died Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born March 9, 1923 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Herman and Genevieve Mayer Gregory. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1941.
On Oct. 12, 1948 in the St. Mary’s Church, she married Paul J. Sorg, who preceded her in death on May 25, 1990.
Mrs. Sorg was a member of the St. Mary’s Church, the St. Mary’s Church Council, the Rosary Altar Society and the St. Mary’s Cemetery Board. She was on the Hospital Board for many years, was the manager of the Elk County Fair during the beginning years when it was on Main Street in Kersey, and was a former member of the Mothers and Fathers Association of the Elk County Catholic High School. She was instrumental in starting the ECCHS Marching Band and was an active member of the Summit Grange and Pamona Grange. She had worked for the Office of Aging for two years, and in her early years worked for Berman’s Clothing Store. She enjoyed growing blueberries and flowers and gardening.
She is survived by three daughters, Janet (Robert Jr.) Werner of St. Marys, Mary M. Sorg of Erie, and Kathleen A. (Peter) Micale of St. Marys; five sons, Gregory P. Sorg of St. Marys, Jacob P. (Paula) Sorg of Denver, Colo., Andrew J. (June) Sorg of Benezette, Paul J. (Cynthia) Sorg Jr. of Lake City, Robert J. Sorg of St. Marys; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Elizabeth Engel, Beatrice Kim, Bernice Tornatore, Marie Storm and Rita Pluskota; and four brothers, Fred Gregory, John Gregory, Robert Gregory and James Gregory, who died in childhood. She was the last member of her immediate family.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Jane G. Sorg will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Meinrad Lawson OSB, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m.
