JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams boys tennis team evened their record to 1-1 on the season with a 5-4 win Thursday afternoon over visiting Bradford.
"It was a good win for the kids," Johnsonburg head boys varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber said following the victory. "They work hard and it paid off."
In the first singles match, J.P. Allegretto pulled off a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cody Bly.
"[Allegretto] dominated his opponent, he took control from the start and dictated play, and when he does that he will win most of the time," Dauber said.
At No. 2 singles, Mason Martonik won 6-2, 6-3 over Conner Vickel; at No. 3 singles, Bradford got on the board as B.J. Jordan topped Shane Bickford, 6-3, 6-4; at No. 4 singles, Nate Fields defeated Tyler Stratus, 6-0, 6-2. It is Fields' first win of the season.
Bradford's Kyle Frombach topped Tommy Imbrogno, 7-6 (8-5), 6-4 in the fifth singles match.
In doubles action, Allegretto/Martonik defeated Bly/Vickel, 8-5; at No. 2 doubles, Bickford/Fields won 8-4 over Jordan/Stratus; at No. 3 doubles, Greeg/Mangella won 8-4 over Imbrogno/Walters; and at No. 4 doubles, Cattoni/Hallenbeck won 8-3 over Christian Cherry and Jeff Mann.
"Mason Martonik remained unbeaten in singles and doubles, and some of the younger kids are coming around," Dauber said. "They're still learning when to go for some shots and it will take a little bit of time but they will get it."
