LOCK HAVEN – Clarion senior shortstop Jerico Weitzel is the PSAC West Player of the Week after helping the Golden Eagles to four straight conference wins over Lock Haven over the weekend in Due West, S.C.
Weitzel hit .607 (17 of 28) in seven games during the week with three doubles, seven RBI, four runs scored and four stolen bases. He also walked five times out of the leadoff spot and had an on-base percentage of .667, a slugging percentage of .714 and an OPS of 1.381.
During Clarion’s four-game sweep of Lock Haven, the Golden Eagles' first season-series sweep of a conference opponent in 25 years, he hit .529 with six runs driven in and two runs scored. His three-run double in an 11-9 Game One victory Saturday helped key a seven-run second inning that erased a 5-0 early deficit. He also scored the eventual game-winning run during a 7-4 Game Two victory over Lock Haven Friday in the fifth inning after leading off the inning of a tie game with a single, and his key two-run double in the sixth inning of a 5-3 Game One victory Friday was part of a three-run inning for the Golden Eagles, who entered the frame tied at two.
Weitzel also performed well in three games earlier in the week against Erskine (S.C.) hitting .727 (8 of 11).
On the season, Weitzel is hitting .465 with eight RBIs, eight runs scored, four doubles and seven stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .538.
NOTES: Clarion is 5-7 overall … The 4-0 PSAC West start is Clarion’s best PSAC West start in at least 35 years … This is the second time in his two years at Clarion that Weitzel has been named Player of the Week … It is the second straight week the Golden Eagles have had a PSAC West award winner. Last week, Mike Dunn was Pitcher of the Week … Clarion returns to action with a pair of PSAC West doubleheaders this weekend. The Golden Eagles are at Gannon for two games Friday and then come home Saturday for a season-opening doubleheader with Gannon starting at 1 p.m.
