Alan James Polito of Incline Village of Lake Tahoe, Nev. and Lailua-Kona, Hawaii and a former Ridgway resident, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 in Hawaii.
Alan was born in Ridgway on June 11, 1943. He was a 1961 graduate of Ridgway Area High School and a 1965 graduate of St. Francis College in Loretto. He earned his Ph. D. in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969 and then did his post-doctoral work in UCLA.
His primary scientific efforts were directed towards research and development and diagnostic test for the hepatitis C virus and other infectious diseases. He authored and coauthored numerous scientific papers before retiring in 2002.
Alan is survived by his wife of Carole of 39 years; a sister, Mary Margaret Gatto Boscaino of State College; a niece, Sylvia Gatto Reed of Ridgway; and a nephew, James Anthony Gatto of Pittsburgh.
A Memorial Service was held in Hawaii on Jan. 23, 2012.
