JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg wrestling team is looking to the upcoming season with optimism with a mix of new and returning wrestlers.
“We should be a competitive young team,” Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano said. “We have three kids that have wrestled previously who haven’t wrestled in the past couple years but they’re back out on the team.”
Zebb Zilcosky will be wrestling at 126 pounds and Votano said he has high expectations for him along with Cory Schneider at 138 pounds.
“I have high expectations on Zebb Zilcosky and Cory Schneider, he hasn’t wrestled since junior high but he’s back, he’s a senior now,” Votano said. “He will shock a lot of people as well as Zebb Zilcosky.”
Alex Zimmerman will be in at 132 pounds and Mitchell Schloder is slated at 170 pounds.
“I believe we have good potential in Alex Zimmerman and Mitchell Schloder,” Votano said. “They both could be district placewinners.”
Maison Walters is another newcomer to the team.
“He’s a senior and this is his first year on the wrestling team,” Votano said. “He’ll be wrestling 170 or 182. I think he’ll find that he’s a pretty scrappy wrestler. We’re just teaching him all the techniques right now. I think he’s going to come in strong and conditioned.”
As the season gets ready to commence, Votano is stressing strength and conditioning with eight wrestlers on the team.
“Right now, our team philosophy is to be stronger and in better condition than our opposing teams because of the lack of numbers,” Votano said.
Johnsonburg will also field a junior high team after two years of not having one.
“Hopefully, the numbers will continue to increase,” Votano said. “Our J.O. program is looking like their numbers are starting to improve. I hope in the next couple years, I hope that our numbers continue to improve and I think we’re going to shock some teams.”
Team members are Alex Zimmerman, Zebb Zilcosky, Caleb Garvey (145), Mike Kennedy (152), Cory Schneider, Dylan DeLong (182 or 195), Maison Walters and Mitchell Schloder (170).
