SHIPPENVILLE – Five players who were first team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com All-District selections a year ago headline the 2011-2012 All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com Preseason All-District boys’ and girls’ basketball teams.
Boys' Pre-Season All-District 9 Team
Two of the 2010-11 first-team choices are on the preseason boys’ team headlined by Ridgway senior guard Eric Matheson, who averaged 16.8 ppg, 4.8 apg, 3.6 rpg and 2.1 spg a year ago while earning first-team honors. Matheson is 12 points shy of hitting 1,000 in his career with 988. He led the Elkers to a 21-5 record last year and a trip to the second round of the District 9 Class A playoffs.
Union senior guard Brody Pollock was also a first-team postseason selection last year after averaging 20.0 ppg for the District 9 runner-up Golden Knights. He helped Union go 20-8 overall with the second-place District 9 finish and a berth in the PIAA playoffs. He has 798 career points.
Brookville senior center Zane Hackett was a second-team choice in 2011 after averaging 13.0 ppg and completing a double-double with 11 rpg. He also averaging nearly three blocks per contest for the District 9 Class AA champion Raiders who finished 22-3 on the season. He has 502 career points.
Moniteau senior guard Kyle Armagost was also a second-team selection last year after averaging 19.2 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 5.6 apg and 3.4 spg for the District 9 runner-up Warriors, who went 15-10 on the year. The lone returning boys’ 1,000-point scorer, Armagost enters his senior season with 1,107.
Cranberry junior guard Ryan Willison was another second-team choice last year after averaging a team-leading 18.4 ppg for the Berries who went 13-10 and qualified for the District 9 Class A playoffs. Willison already has 700 career points.
Girls' Pre-Season All-District 9 Team
Three first-team selections from 2010-11 highlight the 2011-12 preseason District 9 All-District girls’ team – Coudersport senior guard D.J. Cowburn, Cranberry sophomore guard Emily Merryman and Keystone junior guard/forward Morgan Johnson.
Cowburn averaged 14.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.3 spg and 3.9 apg in 2011 while leading the Falcons to the District 9 Class A title as well as a PIAA playoff victory. The Lady Falcons finished the year 25-2. The second-leading active career-scoring leader in District 9 Cowburn enters her senior season with 799 career points.
Only a freshman, Merryman, who was also the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com Rookie of the year, was the leading scorer for the District 9 Class AA champion Lady Berries averaging 12.4 ppg. She helped Cranberry to a final mark of 24-2 including a PIAA playoff appearance. Merryman has 323 career points.
Johnson was the leading scorer for the District 9 Class A quarterfinalist Lady Panthers in 2011 averaging 18.7 ppg. She helped Keystone go 17-6 on the season. Johnson is the third-leading active career scoring leader in District 9 just behind Cowburn with 791 points.
Joining Cowburn, Merryman and Johnson on the preseason All-District squad are Austin senior Katelyn Valenti and Cranberry senior Kylie Mason.
Valenti, a guard, averaged 15.5 ppg for the Lady Panthers in 2011. She is the leading active career scoring leader in District 9 with 855 career tallies.
Mason, a guard, ran the show for the District 9 Class AA champion Lady Berries and averaged 9.1 ppg. She has 413 career points.
