Verne Cuthbert Bixby, 89, peacefully entered on to eternal life on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at her home in Wallingford. She was the wife of Jack W. Bixby with who she celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary on Aug. 17, 2011.
Born in Philadelphia on April 14, 1922, she was the daughter of the late W. Earl and Verna Bressler Cuthbert. Verne was a 1940 graduate of Ridgway High School and a 1945 graduate of Clarion University.
A dedicated teacher and educator all her life, she taught at Johnsonburg, Hazelhurst, Eddystone, Ridley Junior High School, and Norwood Elementary School, retiring in 1984. She was a longtime member of Norwood United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for many years.
Preceeded in death were her beloved sons, Wynn Harper Bixby and Marshall Lee Bixby.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jack W. Bixby; her children, Jack W. Bixby, Jr. (Jan) of Lancaster, James Richard Bixby (Joyce) of Boothwyn; her daughters-in-law, Barbara Bixby of Chestertown, Md. and Laurel Bixby of Newtown Square; her grandchildren, Wyatt Bixby, Shane Bixby (Erica), Stephanie Gaffney (Greg), and Kelly Bixby; and her sister, Lorrayne Fogg of Millersville.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. at Norwood United Methodist Church, 315 Chester Pike, in Norwood.
Visitation will be on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions made in Verne’s memory to Norwood United Methodist Church, 315 Chester Pike, Norwood, Pa. 19074. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Griffith Funeral Chapel in Norwood.
