JOHNSONBURG – St. Marys girls tennis won 5-4 in girls tennis action Thursday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
At No. 1 singles, Taylor Scida of Johnsonburg defeated Mary Rosman, 6-4, 6-4.
“Taylor Scida won her first match. She has to get more confidence in herself,” Johnsonburg coach Gregg Dauber said. “She’s good. She has to realize she’s good.”
St. Marys’ Amy Orr secured a victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Riley Fannin.
Aubrey Wiesner of St. Marys won 6-2, 6-1 over Cheyenne Johnson of Johnsonburg at No. 3 singles. Marta Vega defeated Josie Del Rio by a 6-0, 6-0 margin at No. 4 singles and Paige Martonik won 6-2, 6-2 over Danielle McCoy at No. 5 singles.
At No. 1 doubles, the St. Marys team of Rosman/Orr won 8-0 over the Johnsonburg team of Scida/Fannin. Wiesner/Vega notched a team point at No. 2 doubles with an 8-1 victory over Johnson/Del Rio. This was the last match to be finished and with the team score tied at four, the match that ultimately decided the overall winner.
“St. Marys has a nice team so it was good for us, a good learning experience for us to be that close,” Dauber said. “Some of our doubles need to step up and start playing doubles instead of just hitting the ball around the court. We needed our No. 1 doubles to win and unfortunately they didn’t come through but that will happen. They need to learn from that.”
The Johnsonburg team of Martonik and Andrea Allegretto won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles over the St. Marys team of McCoy and Becky Hanes. Paige Secco and Ann Carnahan won at No. 4 doubles for the Ramettes with an 8-4 victory over Megan McCoy and Rachel Ehrensberger of St. Marys.
“I’m happy for Paige Secco and Ann Carnahan, they won their first match,” Dauber said. “Paige Martonik, she won singles and doubles, that’s great. They’re improving.”
Johnsonburg is at Punxsutawney for a 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Johnsonburg’s match with Brockway, originally scheduled for Aug. 31, has been postponed to Sept. 12.
“Overall, it’s improving, it’s a work in progress,” Dauber said. “I’m not happy with losing but when you lose and you’re there and you have a chance to win, it’s OK. We’ll take it and build on it. We have a decent team, we really do. They played better and that’s a good thing.”
