ST. MARYS – In a case of cross-town rivalry at its best, the Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team edged the squad from St. Marys Area High School 224-225 in a close match played at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.
"It was as good of a match as we could have asked for," said St. Marys Area head coach Dan Vollmer. "Unfortunately for the Dutch, one of the players added incorrectly and had to take a higher score than they shot."
Eight players from each school participated in the match; however, only the top five scores from each team counted for their total.
Elk Catholic's Bruno Cavalline was the medalist for the day with a five-over-par round of 41. Top scorers for the Dutchmen were Owen Schreiber and Rudy Gleixner with 44s.
For Elk Catholic, Brandon Schlimm finished the day with a 45, followed by Elliott Struble, Jess Jaynes and Mitchell Struble, all with 46s. Other Crusader scores were Alan Brennen with a 46, Drew Meyer with a 47 and Scott Reichard with a 59.
For St. Marys Area, Philip Danz shot a 45, followed by Dillon Gallagher and Bob Watts with 46s. Other Dutchmen scores were Justin Beimel with a 47, Quinn Cunningham with a 48 and Sam Miller with a 51.
The Dutchmen will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Johnsonburg for a 3:30 p.m. match. The Crusaders will play host to Ridgway on Thursday, also in a 3:30 p.m. match.
