Eugene “Gene” Cooney of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Johnsonburg, died July 27, 2011.
He was born in Johnsonburg Jan. 3, 1948 and was the son of the late George F. and Irene C. Cooney.
He graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Duquesne University. He attended the U.S. Army Officers Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Va. and was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Army Logistics Corp. He received his Masters of Business Administration degree from Penn State University. Gene began his banking career in 1973 at Mellon Bank, Pittsburgh and was later recruited to Centrust Bank, Miami, Fla. After Centrust, he formed CCI Financial Services Consulting Firm specializing in litigation support for financial institutions. Gene enjoyed movie classics, 50s and 60s rock and roll, jazz and he was an avid reader.
He is survived by two daughters, Kelly Cooney and husband Joshua Schwartz, Atlanta, Ga. and Lauren Barron and husband James, Nashville, Tenn.; two grandsons, Jack and Thomas Schwartz; his companion Elizabeth Huston, Greeneville, N.C.; two brothers, George Cooney Jr., Birchrunville, and Tom Cooney and wife Sheilah, West Grove; a sister, Kathleen Rector and husband Steve, Thornhurst; nieces Gabrielle Cooney and Megan Cooney and nephew Tommy Cooney.
