George R. DiNardo, 88, formerly of 707 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Sunday at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 13, 1923, in Johnsonburg, son of the late Raphael and Serifina (Marrone) DiNardo.
He married Margaret (Mitzie) V. Geci on Nov. 28, 1946 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Marys. She preceded him in death on June 2, 1970.
He had resided in Johnsonburg all of his life and was a 1940 graduate of the Johnsonburg High School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, the Johnsonburg Senior Center, where he was a past president and was instrumental in the building of the new senior center, a past president of the Johnsonburg Rotary Club, where as president he promoted the Buckskin Cicuzza Day Festivities honoring our most decorated community hero of WWII, a past president of Johnsonburg Area School Board, an Elk County Director of Route 219 Association serving with Directors John Antonini and Harrison Stackpole, and chairman of the Youth Center Committee. He was appointed Scoutmaster of the Bucktail Council BSA Troop to the 1946 Valley Forge, Pa. World Scout Jamboree event with an attendance of 52,000 scouts.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII.
He had been employed as postmaster at the Johnsonburg Post Office and had been an owner of DiNardo Paving before his retirement.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Catherine Frey of Johnsonburg, Diane McAlee of Houston, Texas, and Sarah Grunthaner of Johnsonburg; a stepdaughter, Tana Mulligan of Chester, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Margaret Harris of Johnsonburg, Marie Spangler of Johnsonburg, Krista Runge of Houston, Texas, Tammy Locklear of Houston, Texas, and Zoey Grunthaner of Johnsonburg; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Almerinda Ewing of St. Marys; two brothers, Dominic (Tony) DiNardo of Johnsonburg and Noah DiNardo of New Brittain; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James (Duke) DiNardo, Ottoviano (Tom) DiNardo, and Giovanni (John) DiNardo; two sisters, Elizabeth Casciani and Josephine Torchia; three siblings in infancy, Irene, Emma and Noah; and a stepson, John P. Murphy III.
A Memorial Mass for George R. DiNardo will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Friday at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Fr. David Wilson, pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
