ST. MARYS – Game MVP Jenna Matzinger of Coudersport scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Blue Team to a 92-76 win in the 12th annual Alice R. Kozel Foundation District 9 Girls All-Star Basketball Game played Saturday night at Elk County Catholic High School.
Blue used a 15-5 run at the end of the first half to build a 47-36 halftime lead and then built the lead to as many as 23, 86-63, late in the second half before White made a late run getting within 10, 86-76, with 42 seconds to play.
ECC’s Karly Carnovale added 12 points and four assists for Blue with Brockway’s Jalina Sabatose scoring 11 points and Johnsonburg’s Justis Myers accounting for eight points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds.
For the White Team, DuBois Central Catholic’s Miller Hopkins tied for game-high scoring honors with 16 points while adding six rebounds. She was 7 of 9 shooting. Coudersport’s Tori Brown added 13 points with Kane’s Ashley Wilson tying for game-high rebounding honors with 10.
NOTES – The winner of the girls 3-point shooting contest, which was held at halftime of the boys’ game, was Clarion-Limestone’s Jade Walker, who edge Sabatose 11-10 … St. Marys’ Kayla Hoohuli, the third all-time leading scorer in District 9 history, was originally going to miss the game because of a knee injury but ended up playing sparingly, mainly on the offensive end, and scoring nine points, on three 3-pointers, in six minutes of action.
