Hilda C. Mearkle, 79, of Baltimore, Md. passed to her eternal reward Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Bayview Hospital in Baltimore.
Hilda was born Nov. 6, 1931 in Ridgway, daughter of Donald J. Alabran and Ellen I. (Ecklund). She was married for several years to Bertram Mearkle.
Ms. Mearkle was a resident of Ridgway until 1940 when the family moved to Baltimore to get help for her. Hilda had cerebral palsy since birth. She received therapy through the Maryland League for Crippled Children and walked without assistance at 9 years of age. Hilda attended public schools through high school.
She was a member of Hallmark Church of the Nazarene. Hilda loved life, people, traveling and the memorabelia she collected from her journeys.
After her marriage ended, Hilda resided in Dundalk, Md. and recently was a resident at Future Care Northpoint when taken ill with acute pneumonia.
Ms. Mearkle is survived by her sister, Mary Cameron, of Rochester, N.Y.; her sister-in-law, Patti Alabran, of Anacortes, Wash.; former sister-in-law and close friend, June Alabran, of San Clemente, Calif.; several nephews and nieces and numerous cousins, many in the Ridgway area. She is also survived by her very best friend of recent years, Diana Keifer of Baltimore.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald J. Alabran, Jr., and a brother-in-law, Elwood A. Cameron.
Hilda's desire was to donate her body to science. A family time of memorial will be held at Parkwood Cemetary in Baltimore at a later date.
