LOCK HAVEN – Clarion junior shortstop Jerico Weitzel (Ridgway/Ridgway) is the PSAC West baseball Player of the Week after helping the Golden Eagles split a pair of games against Mercyhurst Saturday.
Weitzel, who is hitting .293 on the season, hit .625 (5-for-8) with three runs scored and four RBIs in the doubleheader while also stealing a pair of bases in as many tries.
Playing a key role in Clarion’s 11-8 eight-inning, second-game win, Weitzel was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. He had a key RBI single and scored a run in a four-run eighth inning that gave Clarion the win.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Weitzel was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Clarion is 1-1 in the PSAC West and 3-14 on the season. The Golden Eagles return to action at 1 p.m. Friday when they travel to Slippery Rock for a doubleheader. Clarion then hosts Slippery Rock in a twin bill starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
NOTES – Weitzel is the first Golden Eagle to earn PSAC West baseball Player of the Week honors since 2006 when shortstop Matt Petrowsky won the award.
