JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg boys tennis team enters this season with new faces including a new coach.
Gregg Dauber takes over as the boys tennis coach this season. Dauber is also the girls tennis coach for Johnsonburg. Dauber previously coached the boys team for seven years about a decade ago. He said the numbers are growing after only having three the first week.
“It was three the first week of practice,” Dauber said. “Now we have five kids that came out. A couple of them don’t have any experience but at least they came out and are trying it.”
The returning players are John Paul Allegretto, Jon Carnovale and Mason Martonik.
“We have three kids that played last year, they all played good positions and they’re all pretty good kids too,” Dauber said. “That helps.”
Dauber outlined his projected lineup into the season.
“John Paul Allegretto will probably be No. 1,” Dauber said. “Mason Martonik or Jon Carnovale will be No. 2 or 3. At least there are experience in the first three positions. They’re pretty good athletes too. That makes up for a lot of inexperience, being a good athlete. I have one senior so that’s good. One senior and two juniors.”
Dauber said the practices to prepare for the season are going well.
“It’s fun and I think they’re learning,” Dauber said. “That’s one good thing with the new kids. At least they are learning the way I like them to play. It’s a good start. We’ll make do with what we have and I’m glad they came out.”
Johnsonburg's first home match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 6 against DuBois Central Catholic after three road matches scheduled to open the season as of now.
Team members this season are Carnovale, Martonik, Allegretto, Nate Field, Luke Shreffler, Shane Bickford and Alex Nicklas.
