Students return from Northern Plains BEST Championship

Six students at the Ridgway Area High School recently traveled to Fargo, N.D. to compete in the Northern Plains BEST Championship, a competition in which the team finished 26th out of 36 teams.
Dustin Oknefski, the instructor of a robotics class at the high school, went to Fargo along with six of his students: Weston Towne, J.J. Klase, Damian Challingsworth, Arthur Harvey, Chucky Krobot and Allie HIll.

Local man charged with theft from employer

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man is facing felony charges of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property for allegedly stealing money from his place of employment.
Jamie Neal Wilson, 35, of 10 Mark St., a store manager at St. Marys AutoZone, is accused of stealing money that he was responsible for depositing at PNC bank and taking cash from registers.
On Nov. 20, the St. Marys Police were contacted by AutoZone's regional loss prevention manager who reported that three deposits were missing from Oct. 17-19.

No tax hike budget approved for county

County commissioners unanimously approved a $12.35 million county operational budget plan Tuesday morning for 2015.
The spending plan reflects no tax increase while maintaining “full continuation of all vital county services, programs and departments, including a 3 percent cost of living increase for bargaining and non-bargaining employees,” according to the county’s board of commissioners.

Close waived for court in domestic dispute

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man was waived for court on charges stemming from his alleged involvement in a violent dispute over child custody which resulted in the injury of a 2-year-old girl.

Benezette man charged in jewelry theft

JAY TWP. – A Benezette resident has been charged with the theft of various pieces of jewelry, including items of sentimental value to Denise Lorraine Bahl, 55, of Force.
Robert Joseph Wehner, 46, of Benezette was charged with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property when another acquaintance, Earnest Caldarelli, searched Wehner's belongings and found him to be in possession of Bahl's jewelry as well as jewelry belonging to Caldarelli. Wehner reportedly told police that he wasn't present when they went through his suitcase and doesn't know where the jewelry came from.

Christmas Day Happening event Thursday

The 32nd Annual Christmas Day Happening event will be held Thursday, Dec. 25 beginning at noon at the Central Fire Station along North Broad Street in Ridgway.
The event serves "to provide a Christmas meal to community members who would otherwise be spending the holiday alone," according to event organizer Karen Lundin. The event is an "afternoon of socializing with old friends and new acquaintances, a splendid meal, and delightful entertainment, all free of charge. Over the years, guests and volunteers who have gathered together on Christmas Day in Ridgway have become a family."

Kettle-A-Thon held in downtown Ridgway

The brainstorm of volunteer/maintenance worker John Youngmark, the Ridgway Salvation Army held its first annual Kettle-A-Thon Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of their office at 245 West Main St.

Recycling center offers Borough options

ST. MARYS – Despite the Ridgway Borough council's recent decision to discontinue the curbside recycling program that has been used within the Ridgway Borough since 1991, options are still available for borough residents that still wish to recycle.
Bekki Titchner, solid waste and recycling coordinator of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, discussed the benefits of using the recycling center in St. Marys as the main collection medium for recyclables.

Landfill cleanup could cost borough $118K

The cleanup of the former Ridgway borough municipal landfill site located along Jakes Hollow Road in Ridgway Township could cost the Ridgway Borough or Ridgway Borough Municipal Authority over $118,000.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection removed contaminants from the site in October, but it has not been determined who will be held responsible for the costs associated with the cleanup.
The total cost for the cleanup for the project sits at $118,399.46, according to Ridgway Borough Municipal Authority secretary/treasurer and Ridgway Borough manager Kim Zimmerman.

Career education initiatives highlighted

Education was a major point of discussion during Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the executive board of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission.
This month’s education discussion focused around the entrepreneurial programs that are being started within the region’s high schools, as well as the rural college initiative that is being worked on to bring a post-secondary institution into the area.

Dilley waived for court on arson charges

JOHNSONBURG – Jon Frederick Dilley, 54, of Ridgway, waived his preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge George A. "Tony" King Wednesday morning and is scheduled to be arraigned at county court on Jan. 5.
Dilley faces felony charges of arson and risking catastrophe and lesser related offenses stemming from an incident involving a large brush fire on Sept. 21 and the burning of a neighbor's couch.

3 jailed in storage shed burglaries

ST. MARYS – Three St. Marys residents have been arrested and charged with felony counts of criminal conspiracy, burglary and criminal trespass after police found property in a vehicle that was allegedly removed from a storage shed along Bucktail Road.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, police were on patrol in the area of Sheetz on Sept. 24 when they encountered Tracy Ann Robinson, 32, Lloyd E. Rairdan, 34, and Christopher McMillen, 23, who had an active arrest warrant.
